In an era when Women were barred from most scientific spaces, Sarah Frances Whiting boldly stepped into the lab and made HERstory. As one of the first American Women physicists, she transformed Wellesley College into a hub of scientific discovery, inspiring generations of Women to reach for the stars.

In 1880, she began teaching astronomy, mentoring trailblazers like Annie Jump Cannon. By 1895, Whiting made the first X-ray photographs in the United States, proving that Women were not just observers of science, they were driving it forward. She later became the first Woman to attend physics classes at MIT and the first director of the Whitin Observatory (built in 1900).

Sarah Frances Whiting didn’t just study the cosmos, she expanded the universe of possibility for Women everywhere.
