Before Women could vote, travel freely, or even be taken seriously in science, Maria Sibylla Merian (born 04.02.1647) was out in the world documenting life itself. Born in Germany, she became one of the first European naturalists to observe insects directly and record their life cycles with unmatched precision and artistry.

In 1705, she published her groundbreaking Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, a dazzling collection of 60 hand-painted illustrations capturing tropical insects, plants, and animals in their full ecological glory. Her work stunned Europe, laying the foundation of modern ecology and inspiring generations of scientists and artists alike.

At a time when Women were confined to household duties, Merian funded her own expeditions, built her own business, and turned her passion into independence. Goethe himself said she moved “between art and science”, and she did so with wings of her own making.
