The Woman Who Built the New Deal.    On March 4, 1933, Frances Perkins shattered one of America’s toughest glass ceilings when she became the first Woman ever to serve in a U.S. presidential cabinet as Secretary of Labor under Franklin D. Roosevelt.

A fierce advocate for working people, Perkins was the driving force behind Social Security, the minimum wage, the 40-hour workweek, and unemployment insurance, all cornerstones of American labor rights that still protect millions today.

At a time when Women’s voices were routinely dismissed, Frances Perkins spoke truth to power and rewrote the rules of public service. Her legacy proves that when Women lead, nations transform.
