Fighter for Suffrage
Mary Ann Shadd was born on 09.October.1823 in Delaware to free Black parents. Because Black children were not allowed education in Delaware, her parents moved the family to Pennsylvania. Mary attended a Quaker boarding school and upon graduation, became a teacher. When Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850, Mary and her family left the US for Canada. While in Canada, Mary founded The Provincial Freeman newspaper, becoming the 1st Woman publisher in Canada. She eventually returned to the US, earning a law degree from Howard University and thrusting herself into the Suffrage movement alongside Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. In January 1874, Mary made HERstory by addressing the House Judiciary Committee as part of a group of Suffrage Women petitioning for the right to vote.
